estrenar

the old clothes and shoes
she peeled off and put on
her new spring dress to
match her glowing face

when they saw her as
she estrenar down the street
they were enamored by
her mesmerizing perfume

she simply smiled as she
collected their compliments
into her heavy purse

- Written for dVerse Poetics: I Have No Word in English For.  I chose the word "estrenar" which in Spanish means to premiere, or to wear or use for the very first time.

  1. I love the fresh boldness of spring imagery, Maria, of "estrenar," personified --- and the added bonus of collecting "compliments in her heavy purse," says so much briefly, adroitly.

  3. I love your interpretation of ‘estrenar’, Maria. I shall be putting on my spring dress today; it’s not new, but I like it! I also like the phrase collecting 'compliments in her heavy purse'.

  5. Ah... it costs to dress well... in more ways than one.

  6. I love this "new Easter Bonnet" use of Estrenar, and the first lines bring to my body thatsensation of letting go old garments and woo-ing in the new. Silently accepting those compliments... delicious!
