looking out the window

she looks out the window
watches children build snowmen
her neighbor pushing a snow blower
clearing out this driveway
she sips her coffee taking in
the icicles handing from the roof
she recalls her youthful days
playing in the snow, but now
all she feels is the biting cold

in December

in December many people
get into the holiday spirit
lawns covered in dazzling lights
children write their gift wish lists
kitchens busy baking cookies

as for me I complete another
cycle around the sun
yet I loathe this time of year –
I know a long December will
lead to a longer January
those cold weather blues
always getting me down

I look out from my window
wondering when the first flakes
will fall from the winter sky
turning my heart to ice
before spring’s thaw

I used the following song titles in my poem:  "Cold Weather Blues" by Muddy Waters and "A Long December" by Counting Crows

first snow day

it is the first snow day of the year and
I have to leave my warm apartment
I brush off inches of snow off the car
after hours of falling snowflakes
the coldness seeps through my boots
and into my frigid feet and toes
I try to clear the car in a hurry
before my fingers begin to tingle
I slowly pull out of my parking space
with a prayer all the way to my destination

winter

the winter solstice had came
and the sun slipped into horizons
before we got to say goodbye
I waited for you to come back
still shadows my only company
as countless snowflakes fell
my heart a block of ice
that would not thaw until
you returned in Spring
