in autumn

we watch the sun
dips into the horizon
as summer slips away

the evening sky
paints in lovely shades
as we grow closer
in minds and hearts

far off, a hill lies
bare of green
now blooming in
autumn hues

at the dance

the punch had too much sugar
but I sipped it anyway
standing by the table
I watch classmates dance with
synchronized feet and stiff arms
as always, I’m the odd one out
I take in the spectacle as my mind
drifts to faraway daydreams

in sorrow

each journey has a
beginning and end
we have reached
the end of the road

the sun has set
the chapter has closed
and now my heart
is left broken

I seek solace
in the night stars
but the unlit sky
only greets me

work

my grandparents, sharecroppers

worked in fields from sunrise to sundown

my father gained rough hands

fixing car transmissions during the day

while my mother cleaned offices at nightfall

I work in an office sitting before

computer screens for hours -

a move up still stressful
