from across the room

our eyes connected across the room
the crowd not even in our view
my eyes browse your handsome face
for a moment I felt my heart beat again
as your feet carried you over the throng
I sipped wine hoping this isn’t a dream

dream bin

she places her dreams
in a bin beside her bed
so they can be waiting
for her at bedtime
chasing away the blues
and horrors that assault
her eyes and ears each day

if she could only sleep

she wanted to sleep
and dream of orange
crush sunsets or
cerulean blue seas

but only dark shadows
and ghastly figures
came to mind each time
she closed her eyes

insomnia would have
been a better companion
than the darkness that
plagued her nights

Hershey's kisses

she would find
Hershey’s kisses
in her Easter basket
making her smile

later should would
have stashes of
silver teardrops
at her work desk

those tiny chocolates
made tears less
hurtful with just
a drop of sugar

in her pocket she
holds candied kisses
gifting them out to
her grandchildren

her own rules

she walked to the beat of her own drum
did everything her mother told her not to do and
ignored her father’s pleas to stay inside the lines
she blocked out the static from the crowd
living out her life under her own rules
