shadows of silence

sitting in this room 

late afternoon sun shining 

through blinds as I try 

to keep breathing surrounded

by the shadows of silence

I used to watch my dad 

sit at the kitchen table 

reading newspapers 

 

as a teen I sought out

the sports page for news 

on my favorite teams 

 

now I read articles on 

flat screens, no longer 

holding those ink pages  

in my hands

black fedora

he spotted my black fedora 

from across the dance floor 

when we reach arm’s length 

you complimented me 

little did I know that was 

the start of a new chapter

 

thought it was a bit short 

the adventure was indeed fun 

occasionally I sit and wonder 

what city you dance in now 

I still have that black hat 

sitting in my closet now 

collecting dust and memories

eyes

blue was the color of the eyes class

belonging to my first best friend

in school

 

in the artificial light I noticed 

the green in my grandfather’s eyes 

full of many tales 

 

it was golden brown that stole 

my teen heart away  

one summer afternoon
