summer sets

the summer sun sets
as our ending becomes real
I weep with the stars
wish I wasn’t such a fool
and knew true love wasn’t you

wishing upon stars

wishing upon stars
I asked the moon to send me
my true love before
I begin to lose all hope
and in earnest she sent you

solstice

on the longest day of the year
I gave my heart to you
thinking you would cherish it

and you did for awhile
before the leaves turned brown
and the ties that bound us snapped

on the longest night of the year
I glued my heart back together
hoping to love again next spring

cycles

it seems our love is always
going through cycles
of highs and lows
mountaintops and valleys
I wish we could find that
even balance like the horizon
where the sun rises and sets
maybe our stars aren’t aligned
or maybe we’re just wasting time

I wish I could

I wish I could
be at ease and
not let this anxiety
get the best of me

I wish I could
stop and smell
the roses instead of
worrying about bees

I wish this tingling
in my hands
would go away and
not stay for days

I want to breathe
at ease and not worry
but my mind
won’t let me be

freedom

We are given to the freedom to choose when to become mothers, or when not be a mother.  We can choose when to marry our true love, or when to walk away when it’s over.  We can choose our career path or we can stay at home with our children.  We are given choices, yet so many outside our minds and bodies want to shape or limit that freedom.  Why not let one chose her own path and let her face the consequences, without your judgmental eyes and tongues.  Trust me – she has plenty of her own.

like a bird
soaring towards mountains
the sky sighs

heart

I use to wear my heart
on my sleeve
believing cupid’s arrow
would strike my true love

then there was that summer
I laid eyes upon you
and my heart bloomed
with undying love

now my heart is stone
broken too many times
by those who played
by different rules

cobblestone streets of Old San Juan

along cobblestone streets I walked
where my ancestors once strolled
in this tropical paradise
it was here I came to find
my Latina heritage and reclaim
an identity I felt estranged from
but honestly it was already within
it just needed a little nudging
