the mole

Mary was forty-two when she noticed a large mole near her belly button.   She was certain it wasn’t there before.   Mary told herself it was probably nothing to worry about.  She had several moles in other places.   Yet her anxious brain took her thoughts to dark places.  Besides, she was on the other side of forty.  She was not too young to die.

She made an appointment with a dermatologist.  The doctor told Mary the medical term for the skin condition, but it went over her head.  In short, likely not cancerous.  To be safe, the doctor stated she could remove it.  Mary had always been safe.

Mary laid back as the doctor prepared for the procedure.  She had it sliced away leaving a scar.  Perhaps she should have applied more lotion to the area, but at least her mind was quiet for now.

- Decided to write something different this week.  Written for dVerse Prosery: slices and scars

  4. I feel like I know Mary now. I bet she slathers on the lotion from here on. A great little character study, so tight.
