cracked stucco
s
he thought their love
was beautiful as
a summer sunrise
yet behind the façade
was cracked stucco
revealing harsh truths

we wrote on blackboards
we wrote our names on blackboards
using chalk in white and pastel hues
while dividing numbers
the smell entering my nose
white dust covering my fingers
I still remember standing next
to my classmates – some gone,
others living far away,
yet the memory remains

counting fingers and toes
she counted each
finger and toe
with loving caresses
bright eyes stare back
with a toothless smile
she snuggles the bundle
in her arms warmly
knowing these days
will pass in a flash

catching up
under a summer sun
we sat on porches
catching up on days
lost to other seasons
we sip cool lemonade
watching the sun
dip from the sky
waiting for the moon
to impress our eyes
we count the silver stars
before we go inside
