Poem for today:  Octain Refrain

Here's my first ever attempt an Octain Refrain poem:

“returning soldier”

the ghosts of the dead haunt him still
plaguing his mind with such nightmares
in his dreams, all they do is stare

the doctors try to help with pills
yet every night, they come with fright
and slowly they break down his will

he wants to live without such cares
but ghosts of the dead haunt him still

  1. Sadly the effects of war lingers on, despite the pills and counseling ~ I hope he will be able to deal with the ghosts of the dead ~

    1. Thanks for reading. I saw an interview with a soldier who served in Iraq and it inspired this piece. Happy Easter to you too.

    1. I never heard of the octain poem until I read about in the dVerse blog. But for some reason the words flowed easily when I decided to write about this subject. Thanks for reading.

Very important message in your poem. I feel very strongly about these suffering soldiers that return home worse off than when they left. I believe they should have the best possible care to help restore their peace.

  11. I think it is wonderful that your poem was inspired by a soldier's story. I'm sure he'd appreciate bringing more light to it.
