the
old house
held
such dark secrets
in
shadows
they
all lurk
until
the witching hour
to
open my door
the
belief
in
ghosts never held
a
strong hold
within
me
until
the summer night when
I
smelled your perfume
it
was you –
no
doubt in my mind
through
gateways
you
returned
what
it to check up on us
or
just to pass time?
or
maybe
you
felt something dark
taking
hold
in
my mind
your
presence was able to
push
darkness away

Goodness. I can smell that perfume. Eery, and somehow still comforting.

I love that.
The power of smell is incredible. I often smell my grandmother's perfume and in our house there is sometimes a strong smell of tobacco, and neither of us smokes! I love the final stanza.
ReplyDeleteYes, the final stanza hints at the truth of why we might experience apparitions of loved ones. I don't believe their spirits ever intend to harm or scare us, but to aid us when they see something we do not.
ReplyDeleteSuch a lovely, comforting visit! I hope it's a true story.
ReplyDeleteNothing gives away a presence more than a scent.
ReplyDeleteA classic kind of story. My one ghost like experience was a sound and then discovery of a scent...and yes I wondered why...
ReplyDeleteI like how the presence of the ghost pushed darkness away.
ReplyDeleteI doubt ghosts and such (not demons - totally different) but to smell an old perfume or see something fleetingly could change my mind as I often wonder....
ReplyDeleteI like that a scent can help calm the nerves.
